Reading the roadmap as of October 2026

The openfront roadmap points toward deeper progression, more competitive modes, and broader platform support. Steam has already launched, while the newest listed release is v0.35.0-beta1, making the distinction between completed updates and beta additions especially useful when deciding what to play next.

StatusConcrete exampleWhat it means for players
Released milestoneSteam Early Access launched September 17, 2026The Steam launch is complete, although development continues.
Documented betav0.35.0-beta1, listed on October 13Progression and additional ranked queues appear in beta release notes.
Longer-term planNative mobile apps and stronger offline supportThese remain development goals without firm individual release dates.

The GitHub release history is the clearest place to check version-specific changes. The Steam page explains Early Access expectations, while the Reddit roadmap gives a wider view of the team's intended direction.

A feature can also be partially delivered. Existing clan leaderboards do not mean every planned clan improvement is finished, and existing offline play does not mean offline support has reached its intended final state.

Completed updates and the Steam launch

MilestoneDateNotable additions
Update 21.0April 6, 2025Team mode, menu translations, gold donations, and additional maps.
Update 33.0July 31, 2026Doomsday Clock, ranked 2v2 with its own ladder, and 22 new maps.
Update 34.0September 14, 2026Public profiles, trusted-only scheduled lobbies, player reporting, cosmetics inventory, and a fuller lobby browser.
Steam Early AccessSeptember 17, 2026Steam availability with achievements, offline play, exclusive cosmetics, and shared multiplayer with browser players.

Update 34.0 also changed match behavior. Hard and Impossible nations received improvements to target selection and alliance decisions. The update adjusted the economy and attack model, including a cap on the expansion-speed advantage enjoyed by very large empires.

Its map additions were Yangtze River, Cape Cod, Channel Islands, and Gulf of Mexico. China received modern borders, while the earlier version remained available as Qing China. These are completed content changes rather than placeholders for future map development.

The Steam launch expands how players access the same game. Browser and Steam players share multiplayer servers, and the browser version remains free.

What the v0.35 beta adds

The October 13 GitHub entry is tagged v0.35.0-beta1, even though its notes use the heading “v0.35.0.” That beta designation matters: the notes document substantial additions, but the tag alone does not establish a finished stable release or availability in every client.

AreaDocumented beta changesPlayer impact
ProgressionMatch XP, visible levels, profile progression tools, and PrestigeMatches contribute to longer-term account advancement.
Ranked competitionRanked Free For All and Clan WarsSolo survival and organized clans gain additional rated formats.
ReplaysTimeline seeking and access through finished-game historyPlayers can revisit specific moments more conveniently.
NationsImproved building, retaliation, naval decisions, and nuclear targetingHigher-difficulty opponents use more developed strategies.
Lobby capacityPlayer limits derived from map land instead of a universal 125-player capSome maps support substantially larger matches.
CommunicationFaster quick chat and a redesigned emoji menuCommon messages and reactions take fewer interactions.

Progression includes XP breakdowns after a match and a provisional amount when a player is eliminated. Level badges appear in several player-facing locations. At level 100, players can Prestige, progressing through P10 and then Legend. The reward track includes Plutonium every 25 levels, and account settings provide options to hide levels and exclude profiles from search engines.

The competitive additions have distinct formats:

  • Ranked FFA: Four to ten players matched by ELO, using continent maps and a 20-minute timer. The match ends when one human remains.
  • Ranked Clan Wars: Two to five players per side, with up to four clans participating. Rating changes apply to the clan.
  • Ranked access: Trusted accounts are required, with locked access indicated in the interface.

Larger lobbies include capacities of 210 on The Box, 185 on Alps, and 170 on Middle East. The beta also lists eight maps: Madagascar, Horn of Africa, Vancouver Island, Cape of Good Hope, Canary Islands, Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Rio de Janeiro, and Pulicat Lake.

Other changes restore annexation of territory cut off by nuclear strikes and reduce the homepage's initial download. Players returning after an earlier version should also check controls: the beta moves select-all-warships from F to X.

Plans that still need release confirmation

The 2026 roadmap discussion describes ambitions across accounts, competition, performance, community tools, and content. It explicitly presents the roadmap as changeable. Treat individual items as development intentions until release notes identify what actually shipped.

The official Steam page gives a narrower description of the planned full version: better offline support, more modes, and additional player and clan leaderboards. It estimates approximately six months in Early Access, while allowing that duration to change with player requests.

Counting six months from September 17 suggests roughly March 2027. That is an estimate derived from the stated duration, not an officially confirmed full-release date.

Some terminology has also evolved. The earlier roadmap proposed a Gold-based customization economy, whereas the v0.35 beta describes Plutonium progression rewards. Avoid assuming that an older currency proposal explains the current reward system or guarantees future purchase rules.

How to track changes and contribute

  • Check the version tag first. A beta label changes how confidently you should expect the documented features in your usual client.
  • Read the feature details. “More ranked modes” could mean different player counts, eligibility requirements, timers, or rating systems.
  • Compare dates across pages. A wiki homepage can still feature an earlier major update after a newer beta appears on GitHub.
  • Follow GitHub development discussions. The public roadmap and project activity help distinguish proposals from work moving toward release.
  • Give reproducible feedback. For bugs, include the version, device, map, and steps that caused the problem. For suggestions, explain the gameplay problem the change would solve.

OpenFront's community channels include Discord, Reddit, and GitHub. The roadmap also describes feature voting, development updates, and community question sessions, although those proposed communication schedules should not be treated as guaranteed publishing dates.

FAQ

Where can I find the openfront roadmap?

The 2026 overview appears in the roadmap post on r/Openfront, while GitHub hosts ongoing development and release information. Use the roadmap for direction and dated release notes to establish which features have reached a particular version.

Is v0.35 already a stable update?

The newest listed tag as of October 14, 2026, is v0.35.0-beta1. Its notes describe progression, ranked FFA, Clan Wars, replay seeking, and other changes. The beta tag should be preserved when discussing its release status.

When will OpenFront leave Early Access?

The Steam page estimates about six months after its September 17, 2026 launch. That points approximately to March 2027, but the developer allows the timeline to change. A firm full-release date has not been officially confirmed.

Are native mobile apps available under the roadmap?

Native iOS and Android apps are listed as development goals in the OpenFront Keymailer listing. Their release dates have not been officially confirmed. Playing through a phone browser is separate from installing a dedicated mobile app.

Does a roadmap entry guarantee a feature?

No. The roadmap describes an evolving plan shaped by feedback and development priorities. Features can arrive in stages, change design, or remain unscheduled. For a decision that depends on one feature, check its specific release announcement and version requirements.
