What ends an OpenFront match?

You can control most of the map in OpenFront and still need one more push to win. The usual victory requirement is more than 80% of the usable land, so reaching exactly 80% does not finish the match. Recognizing the active end condition tells you whether your next move should be an attack, a defensive hold, or an urgent expansion.

The numerical rules here follow the v0.34.24 ruleset documented by OpenFront.fyi's win conditions guide. Free-For-All and Team matches evaluate territory differently, while optional Overtime and Doomsday Clock settings can change how the endgame develops.

At the standard territory threshold, the exact comparison works like this:

Exact territory shareAbove the 80% threshold?Result of the territory check
79.99%NoNo territory victory
80.00%NoNo territory victory
80.01%YesTerritory victory

A match can also end when only one surviving side remains. Consequently, conquering every opponent is not always necessary: crossing the territory threshold can finish a game while rivals still hold land.

A large population, a strong economy, and a powerful fleet help you reach victory. None replaces the actual territory or survival requirement.

How territory and team ownership count

The relevant percentage measures your ownership against usable land included in the current calculation. It is not simply the portion of the entire map image painted in your color. Water and territory removed from play should not be treated as ordinary land you must capture.

For a simplified example, suppose you hold 790 of 1,000 counted tiles: your share is 79%. If 20 opposing tiles leave the calculation while your holdings remain intact, your share becomes 790 out of 980, or about 80.61%. You have crossed the standard threshold without capturing another tile.

Who receives credit for that share depends on the mode:

ModeOwnership or survival checkWhat to watch
Free-For-AllEach player's territory share is checked individuallyYour own percentage
TeamThe team's combined territory is checkedCombined team ownership
Ranked 1v1The last surviving player winsWhether the opponent remains alive
Ranked 2v2The last surviving team winsWhether the opposing team remains alive

A diplomatic alliance in Free-For-All does not turn two players into a Team-mode victory group. Allies can make expansion safer, but their holdings do not become your individual territory total. In Team mode, no single member needs to control the winning share alone.

Destruction also deserves a careful reading. If an attack removes land from play, it can change the denominator used for everyone's percentage. That does not mean every nuclear strike automatically improves your position. Check what territory remains yours and what percentage the game reports after the attack.

How Overtime and the Doomsday Clock affect victory

Overtime and the Doomsday Clock are optional lobby systems. Check whether either is enabled before deciding that you can safely wait out a stalemate.

Overtime lowers the territory requirement after the 30-minute mark. The documented reduction is two percentage points per minute. Starting from the normal 80% threshold, that produces these reference points:

Time elapsed after Overtime beginsTerritory thresholdWinning requirement
0 minutes80%More than 80%
1 minute78%More than 78%
2 minutes76%More than 76%
3 minutes74%More than 74%

This changes the value of holding ground. A player with 77% is below an 80% threshold but above a 76% threshold. If Overtime is bringing the requirement below your current share, preserving your territory may finish the match without another expensive offensive.

Equality still matters. Holding exactly 76% does not satisfy a live threshold of 76%. You need additional territory or a further reduction in the requirement. Watch the live threshold rather than relying only on elapsed time.

The Doomsday Clock applies a separate territory pressure requirement. In the documented ruleset, it rises through seven waves to a 35% ceiling. A side that remains below the requirement can suffer a drain and eventually be destroyed.

That pressure bar is not a replacement victory threshold. Getting above it helps you survive; it does not itself award a win. If you are below the bar, securing enough land to escape the penalty can become more urgent than preparing a distant attack on the largest opponent.

Build toward the condition that actually wins

Your economy and military should support a reachable territory objective. Efficient expansion matters because a conquest that leaves you exposed can cost more land than it earns. Before committing troops, consider both the target and the neighbors you will border afterward.

  • Preserve a defensive reserve. Taking nearby land is useful, but spending too much population can make you an attractive target. Expand at a pace that lets you respond if another neighbor attacks.

  • Use early conquests to improve your position. Surrounding vulnerable bots can make clearing nearby territory more efficient. Cities support population growth, helping you turn those early gains into the strength needed for later expansion.

  • Choose opponents you can defeat efficiently. A prolonged fight against a similarly strong neighbor can weaken both sides while a third player grows. Look for opportunities that increase your share without creating an unmanageable new front.

  • Give naval operations a land objective. Warships and ports can support your economy and protect access, but an island fortress still needs enough territory to satisfy the finish condition. A mainland foothold can provide room to grow.

  • Coordinate around the combined total in Team mode. One teammate may defend while another captures land. Evaluate whether the team is gaining or losing territory overall, especially when the combined share is close to the threshold.

Nuclear attacks can disrupt an opponent, but damage alone is not the victory condition. Before spending resources, identify the intended result: opening a route to capture land, stopping a rival's expansion, or changing an endgame position that ordinary attacks cannot resolve efficiently.

Read the endgame before committing troops

The best final move depends on the active rules and the size of the remaining gap. A small, secure capture may be enough to finish a territory game. Under Overtime, keeping your existing holdings may be more valuable than starting another battle.

You hold 77% and the live Overtime threshold is 76%Your share exceeds the reduced requirementThe territory condition is satisfied
You are below the active Doomsday requirementYour survival is under pressureGain enough territory to clear the requirement

Before an attack, make a short check:

  • Confirm whether ownership is being counted individually or for your team.
  • Read the live territory requirement and your current share.
  • Check whether Overtime is active or approaching.
  • Check your position against any Doomsday pressure bar.
  • Estimate whether the attack leaves enough strength to retain the land afterward.

Suppose you are approaching the normal threshold and an isolated opponent remains across the sea. You may not need that opponent's territory at all. Compare the cost of an overseas landing with the amount of accessible land needed to cross the line.

If you are behind, reverse the calculation. Identify what would let the leader finish next: another capture, a falling Overtime threshold, or your elimination. Your response should interrupt that specific route to victory.

FAQ

What is the openfront win condition?

The usual condition is controlling more than 80% of usable land. Free-For-All checks individual ownership, while Team mode checks combined team territory. Elimination can also decide a match, and enabled Overtime or Doomsday settings affect how the finish develops.

Do I need to eliminate every opponent?

No. A territory victory can occur while other players still own land. Once your qualifying share exceeds the live threshold, eliminating the remaining opponents is unnecessary. Ranked survival formats instead focus on the last surviving player or team.

Why did reaching 80% not end the match?

The standard territory comparison requires a share strictly above 80%. Exactly 80% does not pass that check. Also confirm that you are reading the relevant individual or team share and the threshold currently active in your lobby.

Can I win by staying on an island?

An island position can support survival, trade, and naval operations, but survival alone does not satisfy the normal territory requirement. An opponent can potentially win by taking enough mainland territory without conquering your island. Establish access to additional land if your holdings are insufficient.

Does the Doomsday Clock make 35% enough to win?

No. The documented 35% ceiling belongs to the Doomsday pressure system. Clearing that requirement protects you from its territory-based pressure; it does not automatically award victory. The applicable territory threshold or surviving-side condition still determines the winner.
